Roman Abramovich Chelsea owner invites Jose Mourinho to dinner

Roman Abramovich has surprisingly invited Jose Mourinho to have dinner with him after Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Portuguese coach, who has had two separate spells at Stamford Bridge, takes his current club to west London looking to close the gap to league leaders Manchester City.

And according to The Sun, Abramovich hopes to meet up with Mourinho after Sunday’s match – though it is not yet known if Mourinho, who was sacked twice by the Russian billionaire, accepted the invite.

The invite comes at a rather curious time, however, with current Chelsea boss Antonio Conte under increasing pressure amid rumours of a fallout.

Abramovich made a rare visit to the club’s training ground to talk with Conte last Sunday, while it has been reported that the Italian’s conduct over the summer erased any goodwill between him and Chelsea’s hierarchy.

Although Abramovich could just be looking to meet up with a manager who won him three Premier League titles in two separate spells, Mourinho has never painted their relationship in such a way.

‘He was never my friend,’ the Portuguese coach has said previously. ‘We always had the relationship of owner-manager.

LONDON, ENGLAND – MAY 21: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich looks on during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on May 21, 2017 in London, England.

‘Very respectful relationship. But we were never close to each other.’

Mourinho will know better than most how Conte is feeling as rumours continue to swirl regarding his job security, with defeat against Mourinho’s United likely to make for a very nervy two-week international break – a time notorious for sackings.
