Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo recently beat Pele’s famous record by scoring his 78th international goal. The former Brazil international congratulated the Portuguese on the feat, before quickly setting him a new challenge.
It seems than in Pele’s mind, there is no better player than Pele. The Brazilian has never been shy of comparing his achievements to those of modern stars, this time it was Cristiano Ronaldo that was on the receiving end with Pele insisting that the Portuguese must match his career goals tally before he will listen to any comparisons of the two.
“I saw the wonder goal he scored for Portugal and it was very special. It was a great piece of play. But although this is a different era, I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate Cristiano,” explained the 76-year-old in quotes reported by ‘Mundo Deportivo’.
However, the former Santos man is still not ready to listen to comparisons between himself and the Real Madrid star: “When he scores 1,283 goals in his career, then we’ll talk.” Pele reached that incredibe figure during his playing career, though it is worth noting that the quality of the Brazilian league at that point was not really comparable to today’s Spanish top flight and the Champions League.
