Manchester United are expected to rekindle their interest in Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann next summer after manager Jose Mourinho told the powers that be at Old Trafford to make the deal happen.
The French international had been widely expected to join United this summer, only for Atletico to be slapped with a transfer ban that meant they couldn’t register new players until January 2018.
That prompted Griezmann to stay with the club, with the French international reluctant to abandon Diego Simeone’s side in their time of need.
However, it appears that Mourinho hasn’t given up on signing the striker, with English publication ‘The Express’ reporting that United are set to return for the former Real Sociedad man at the end of the current campaign.
The ‘Red Devils’ are likely to have to pay Griezmann’s £88m release clause in order to do a deal but the club have shown in recent years that they are not afraid of spending big money in order to sign their top targets.
There is a school of thought that Diego Costa’s impending arrival at the Wanda Metropolitano and the ability of the club to sign players once again, Griezmann could be reluctantly allowed to leave the club.
The 26-year-old has become a firm fans’ favourite during his time in the Spanish capital, scoring 85 goals in 165 games for ‘Los Colchoneros’, but the player is thought to be keen to test himself in the Premier League.
