A tricky situation for Barcelona. As reported by ‘Radioestadio’ journalist Alfredo Martinez, Leo Messi will not sign a contract extension until the end of the year.
Barcelona’s negotiations to keep Messi from leaving the Camp Nou have come to a standstill. The player himself decided not to rush into anything when he witnessed the club’s troubles in the transfer window just gone by.
Following Neymar’s exit and with a lack of blockbuster signings on Deadline Day, Messi is not sure if Barcelona’s squad is up to task. For that reason, for the time being, he has not wanted to tie his future to the Catalan club any further.
The Argentine’s intentions are clear. His contract runs out in 2018, but he knows Barcelona will wait until the very last moment to renew his deal. Messi has decided to bring negotiations to a halt in order to wait and see how Barcelona’s new project pans out.
If the team’s performances persuade Messi, it will be the player himself who decides to put pen to paper for a renewed deal. If, however, Barca get off to a disappointing start to the campaign, the striker could postpone talks with the Catalan club and, after January 2018, he would be entitled to enter talks with other teams for a move when his contract ends in June next year.
Therefore, Leo Messi’s continuity does not only depend on Barcelona’s directors, but also his teammates. If the ‘new Barcelona’ works, Messi will remain at the Camp Nou.
