There are very few challenges left for Lionel Messi to overcome in his footballing career, but there is one target that the Argentine will have in the back of his mind ahead of tonight’s game against Sporting Lisbon.
Should the Barcelona star manage to find the target in the game, he will score his 100th goal in European competitions.
The diminutive genius already has 96 Champions League goals to his name, which when coupled with his three strikes in the UEFA Super Cup means that he is finely poised ahead of the clash against Jorge Jesus’ side.
Whilst the 30-year-old is unlikely to be stranded on 99 for too long, he still has some way to go to catch up with rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who leads the way with 110 European goals.
The Portuguese reached the 110 mark in 141 gmaes, whilst Messi has 99 in 118 appearances meaning that the latter actually possesses the better goals to game ratio (0.84 to Ronaldo’s 0.77).
The game against Sporting will also be Messi’s 593rd for the Catalan giants, putting him level with club legend Carles Puyol in the appearance stakes. Can Messi mark the occasion with a special goal?
