Despite reports suggesting the Dutch international defender was closing in on a deal to join Liverpool, Van Dijk will finally remain at Southampton.
Ongoing speculation regarding his future has seen the centre-back linked with a number of clubs this summer, most notably Liverpool, who issued a public apology in June for improperly approaching the defender.
However, the former Groningen and Celtic man will be going nowhere this summer after his move to Anfield failed to materialise.
The 26-year-old has not featured for the Saints this season after handing in a transfer request, and has trained alone after being removed from the lineup by coach Mauricio Pellegrino.
A huge blow for Liverpool who were in pole position to sign the defender, in front of Chelsea and Manchester City, but will finally have to watch him return to St Mary’s.
