Kane overtakes Messi to end 2017 as the top scorer

2017 is most certainly the year of Henry Kane, his hat-trick against Southampton on Boxing Day seeing the Tottenham Hotspur forward overtake Lionel Messi as the top scorer across the calendar year.

The aforementioned double took Kane’s tally for the year to 56, two more than the Barcelona icon, with the trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski all finishing the year on 53 goals.

It has been a sensational festive season for the 24-year-old after his previous hat-trick saw Spurs overcome Burnley on December 23.
Not only has he finished as the leading scorer of 2017, his tally of 38 Premier League goals has seen him break Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a single calendar year, set back in 1995.

2017’s highest scorers

1. Kane, 56 goals (49 with Tottenham, 7 with England)

2. Messi, 54 goals (50 with Barcelona, 4 with Argentina)

3. Cavani, 53 goals (50 with PSG, 3 with Uruguay)

4. Lewandowski, 53 goals (44 with Bayern, 9 with Poland)
