Catalan Parliament approves proposal to declare independence

The Catalan Parliament through a secret ballot has voted resoundingly in favour of the proposal, by the parties Junts Pel Si and CUP, to form a Catalonia republic.

There were 70 votes in favour, ten against and two abstentions, for the opening of process that would lead to the “writing and approval of a republican constitution.

The opposition did not take part in the vote.

The general secretary and the Catalan Parliament’s leading legal counsel has said that this verdict maybe called illegal and in concrete, the president of the parliament, Carme Forcadell, added that “it could be affected by the Constitutional Tribunal”.
